Mandala - “My Mother’s Eyes”

On April 29th, Illinois-based rapper Mandala released a new single, “My Mother’s Eyes.”  When describing the new track in his own words he said, “I wrote this song while reflecting on the reality that no matter who I may pretend to be at certain times in my life, at the end of the day, I’m nobody except my mother’s son.”

Like a mother’s gentle touch, “My Mother’s Eyes” has a much more delicate tone than Mandala’s other songs.  Mandala sings on most of this track, even with lyrics like “I can’t really sing good, that’s why I rap.”  He goes on to rap, “But my soul’s really a singer, it’s a fact.”  It’s as if “My Mother’s Eyes” comes from deep inside his soul, which is why a large percentage of the song is him singing.

Staying with his frequent religious themes, Mandala seems to be focused on the idea of Mother Mary (along with his own mother) in that they both get him through the tough times.  They see the best in him and he feels he can overcome anything with the support of Mother Mary and his mother.  Lyrics like “my mother’s eyes get me through all of it,” are one indication of this sentiment.

“My Mother’s Eyes” shows a different side to Mandala.  He always speaks the truth, but this song is like a window through his soul.  It displays a more sensitive, gentler side of Mandala.  What better way to celebrate his mother and all mothers around the world one week before Mother’s Day than with a song in their honor.
